Upstairs Unit Electrical Fire

This fire in an upstairs unit of a duplex was the result of an electrical fire inside a wall.  Electrical fires are one of the four most common types/causes of fire.  Electrical fires are usually caused by:

  • Incorrectly installed wiring
  • Overloaded circuits and extension cords
  • Defective or improper plugs, switches and outlets
  • Misuse and poor maintenance of lighting

There are a few things tenants and homeowners can do to prevent electrical fires:

  1. Never plug in something with a damaged electrical cord
  2. Never cut off a 3rd prong on an electrical cord
  3. Don't overload outlets with too many items
  4. Don't use extension cords as a permanent solution
